Why are drain flies such a persistent problem – and how can the problem be solved permanently?
Many recognize the situation. Small, dark flies start to appear in the bathroom or kitchen. They are fought with sprays, traps or by pouring various cleaning agents or hot water into the drain. For a while it looks good – until after a while the flies return to buzzing.
Why does the problem seem to come back again and again, even though the prevention has been done several times? The answer is surprisingly rarely found in the flies themselves.

Drain flies reveal the condition of the pipes
Drain flies thrive in moist environments where their larvae have plenty of food. This food is found in particular in the biofilm that forms on the inside of sewer pipes – a slimy layer consisting of, for example, grease, soap scum, hair, skin cells and other organic matter, such as food scraps. Drain flies tell you about the condition of the pipes
Flies are not a real problem, but a symptom that there is a suitable habitat for them in the pipeline.
Insecticides, traps and other control methods can quickly reduce the number of adult drain flies. However, they do not eliminate the bacterial biofilm that lives inside the pipes or the larvae that develop there. When the breeding environment is left unchanged, a new generation is quickly born.
“You should just flush the drain with hot water”
This advice is also often encountered on Internet discussion forums. Boiling water or various household cleaners can remove some dirt from the surface of the drain, but they usually do not clean the biofilm that has formed inside the pipes over the years. Especially in extensive sewer networks, the problem often lies much deeper than just a floor drain or an odor trap, where a traditional cleaning agent or drain opener might reach.
Therefore, the problem seems to go away only for a while.

A permanent solution addresses the root cause of the problem
When the breeding habitat of drain flies is removed, so are the flies.
Because of this, the focus has increasingly shifted from mere prevention to proactive maintenance of the sewer system. The biological treatment of the pipeline gradually breaks down the organic matter in the pipeline and prevents the formation of a new biofilm. At the same time, odor nuisances and the risk of pipe blockages are also reduced.
So it’s not just about fighting insects, but about maintaining the functionality of the entire sewer system. When the cause goes away, the effect also goes away.
Drain flies are a sign that organic dirt has accumulated in the pipes, which provides them with food and a place to breed. Waste and bacteria accumulated in the pipes are a common problem in almost all properties.
When the sewer system is proactively maintained and the formation of biofilm is continuously prevented, the flies also lose their habitat. The end result is not only a fly-free space, but a cleaner, odor-free and more reliable sewage system.
The solution developed by SmartPipe effectively combats the larvae of drain flies by eliminating the root cause of the problem – waste accumulations in the pipeline, harmful biofilm and the surface tension of stagnant water. Dozens of customers in Finland have already exterminated tenacious drain flies from their properties with the help of SmartPipe’s maintenance service.
