What is the difference between black and gray water lines?

For most of us, the sewage system is an invisible part of a property or a ship – until something goes wrong. However, the sewage system consists of several different pipes, each with its own function. The two most important are the black water lines and the grey water lines.

Although both transport wastewater, their contents, loading, and maintenance needs differ significantly.

properties

Black water includes toilet wastewater

Black water is water that comes from toilets and urinals. It contains human waste, toilet paper, and a lot of organic matter and nutrients. Over time, black water pipes accumulate deposits such as urinary calculus, mineral deposits, and other solid materials. If these deposits are not removed or prevented, they can lead to blockages, odors, and reduced flow. To break down urinary calculus, we have developed BioTroop FreeFlow, an advanced descaler, and BioTroop Sani, a dual-action toilet cleaner.

Grey water is created from everyday washing

Grey water, on the other hand, comes from showers, sinks, washing machines and often also from kitchens. It does not contain toilet waste, but carries with it, for example, grease, soap, hair, food residues and detergents. Although grey water is cleaner than black water, its pipes are not maintenance-free. Over time, grease and organic dirt in particular can form deposits on the walls of pipes, which slow down the flow and cause unpleasant odours. We have developed BioTroop BL-20 to break down grease and other organic waste from kitchen lines and remove odours.

Why is the difference important?

Because black and gray water load pipelines in different ways, their maintenance also has different priorities.

In black water lines, the emphasis is on controlling scale, minerals and odors. In grey water lines, the biggest challenges are related to grease and the biofilm formed by bacteria in the waste, which causes odors and blockages.

In buildings and ships, both systems require regular maintenance to keep the pipes in working order and avoid expensive repairs.

SmartPipe solutions

Predictive maintenance saves time and money

Drainage problems rarely happen overnight. Most often, dirt accumulates inside the pipes over months or years until the flow slows down or the pipe becomes completely blocked. SmartPipe’s maintenance solutions are developed specifically to manage long-term problems. The effectiveness of our solutions is based on the automatic and continuous dosing of maintenance agents using SmartPipe’s dosing devices.

Regular and proactive maintenance helps keep both black and gray water lines clean, reducing odors, preventing blockages, and extending the life of the entire wastewater system.

A well-maintained sewage system works imperceptibly – just as it should.
