There is a transition underway in shipping towards more biological and predictive maintenance

Maritime industry is currently undergoing a significant transformation. The discussion about ships is no longer focused solely on fuel, emissions or energy efficiency, but increasingly attention is also being paid to the daily maintenance of ships and the long-term operational reliability of the infrastructure.

There seems to be a clear shift towards more proactive thinking in wastewater system maintenance.

The change is driven by many factors. Environmental requirements are constantly tightening, operational efficiency is being improved, and crew workloads are being reduced. In addition, the technical systems on ships are becoming more complex, which increases the need for maintenance and service solutions that support the long-term operation of the systems.

Traditionally, problems with plumbing and wastewater systems have been solved reactively. When odors, blockages, or grease build-up occur, the system is cleaned with harsh chemicals or solvents to quickly bring the problem under control. At the same time, the biological activity essential to wastewater treatment is weakened.

Maritime industry

A reactive approach often solves the symptom, but not the root cause of the problem.

Strong chemicals can temporarily open pipelines and remove deposits, but they can also overload systems, increase the need for maintenance in the long term, and, at worst, reduce the reliability of the pipeline in continuous use. In addition, aggressive chemicals pose their own challenges from the perspective of the environment, safety, and the daily work of the crew.

That is why interest in more predictive maintenance is growing rapidly.

More and more often, our customers are interested in how the above-mentioned problems can be prevented in advance. How can pipelines and wastewater systems be made to remain operational for longer? How can their maintenance needs be reduced? And how can the daily maintenance of the systems be made both more efficient and more responsible?

Biological maintenance solutions are becoming increasingly interesting in maritime industry

Bacteria-based solutions are already widely used in, for example, municipal wastewater treatment and industrial processes. We are increasingly seeing similar thinking in shipping, where cost-efficiency and sustainability are constantly at the forefront of operations.

The biological maintenance products developed by SmartPipe are not based on eliminating problems with harsh chemicals, but on supporting the natural biological balance of systems and proactively managing organic loads. Our way of thinking is significantly different from traditional reactive maintenance and repair work.

Instead of servicing the system only after a blockage or odor occurs, biological proactive treatment aims to reduce the uncontrolled accumulation of grease, organic waste and biofilm before problems arise.

Proactive treatment has a significant long-term impact on the vessel’s daily operations, costs and operational reliability.

Predictive pipeline maintenance reduces downtime, reduces maintenance workload and makes the crew’s daily work easier. At the same time, it can reduce heavy maintenance operations such as acid flushing, mechanical cleaning of pipelines or even pipe renewal needs – tasks that are often expensive, time-consuming and challenging to carry out during normal vessel operations.

Regulation is also driving development in this direction. For example, in the Baltic Sea region, wastewater treatment requirements have become significantly stricter in recent years, increasing the pressure to develop ship systems in a long-term and responsible manner.

Interestingly, many of the most important changes are happening precisely where they are rarely noticed – in the pipelines and technical infrastructure of ships, out of sight.

The efficiency of future shipping will not be built solely on bigger machines or new energy solutions. It is increasingly also about smarter maintenance, foresight and the long-term reliability of systems.

And this is where biological solutions based on predictive maintenance can become a significant part of everyday maritime life.
